This Week's Featured Artist: Chuck Fenda

Most of us still remember the first time hearing Fenda on a track, maybe not knowing his name, but his presence surely announcing itself with a strong delivery and flow speaking as the self proclaimed 'Poor People Defenda.'Fluidly able to switch between his ruff rude boy stance to his serenading styles, it is a characteristic that separates Chuck Fenda and keeps his music spinning from album start to finish and keeps DJ's bumping his tunes worldwide.

Photo: chuckfendaonline.comChuck Fenda the Poor People Defenda Born Leshorn Whitehead June 15, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York, the artist commonly known as Chuck Fenda is a reggae / dub-style deejay with a storied musical career spanning well over a decade with numerous tour stops across the US and Jamaica.
When listening to Chuck's songs and interviews the message is clear that he seeks to to educate, enlighten, uplift, and defend the people through the art form of music. In the mid 90's he spent a lot of time honing his deejaying skills in both Jamaica and New York, while releasing top singles (Me See It Clear, Lift it Up, Bada Bada) from Jamaica's famed King Jammy's studio. By 1997 he was living in Jamaica and establishing himself in the dancehall scene.
The reach of his music broadened noticabely in 2000 when he joined Fifth Element Records, the Kingston based label well known for its prolific work with the likes of Etana, Anthony Cruz, Richie Spice, and more. Fenda's moving lyrics graced his critically acclaimed album Better Days (2004) on songs including Life Ruff Our Deh, I Swear, and How You Feel.
Next Fenda departed Fifth Element due to a management disagreement, but didn't slow down at all. In fact, he dropped singles Gash Dem and Coming Over soon after on the album The Living Fire (2007) (featuring collaborations with Tanya Stephens, Richie Spice, and Cherine Anderson) which further solidified Fenda on the international music stage. As his album title suggests, Chuck Fenda will bring just that to the stage, plus much much more.

This Week's Featured Artist: Winstrong
This year the Monterey Bay ReggaeFest is excited to have Winstrong back for two live performances. First on the Main Stage Friday afternoon and also Sunday evening on the Second Stage. And don't forget he's the special guest at the Blue Fin Cafe & Billiards After Party Friday night too. I have had the pleasure of engineering/mixing shows of Winstrong and can tell you first hand that he is an amazing talent and equally kind individual. Much respect to di Soul Rebel...
His debut album Eye of the Storm (2007), fused 'roots dancehall style with today's sophisticated R&B and Soul' and produced an 'explosive sound' of conscious music that introduced the Soul Rebel in a remarkable fashion. Listen to and watch Winstrong's video from his smash hit "Sounds of the Guns" right here. (read Winstrong's full bio here and visit his Myspace)
